Cameron Highlands in 24 Hours: A Complete Weekend Travel Guide

Thinking of going out of KL city on the weekend? The Cameron Highlands is a perfect destination for you as a solo traveler, maybe with your friends, family, or colleagues. You can visit here any month; however, it’s best to experience the cool weather of the place when you come here in the first quarter of the year. This blog is ideal for budget travelers who would like to escape the city and just be with nature. It tends to be crowded on the weekends, though.

Getting to Cameron Highlands:

  • From Kuala Lumpur:
    • Bus (from TBS Terminal Bersepadu Selatan – 4.5 to 5 hours)
    • Car/Private Transfer (around 3.5 to 4 hours)

There is also an option for you to go to Cameron Highlands if you are coming from Penang or Georgetown island, Penang.

I suggest you book a bus that would depart KL early on a Saturday morning for Cameron Highlands. There are also buses coming from Penang. If you’re traveling in a large group, you may also consider renting a private car for comfort. The road to Cameron Highlands is not your typical straight highway but rather a zigzag road that could cause a dizzy ride because of the hills and high altitude of the place. If you have car sickness, you may want to prepare yourself for the trip. I usually use the Easybook app to see the schedules of the buses and pay online because it’s convenient.

From Kuala Lumpur’s TBS Bus Terminal (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan), the earliest departure going to Tanah Rata Bus Terminal (Cameron Highlands) is at 8:15 AM. You can easily go to TBS Bus Terminal through the public train SPL Line and alight at Bandar Tasik Selatan train station. Once you arrive at the bus terminal, make sure to arrive a bit early to secure your seat and grab some snacks for the journey. The scenic ride to the Cameron Highlands offers stunning views, so keep your camera handy to capture the beautiful landscapes along the way.

From TBS, Kuala Lumpur going to Tanah Rate Bus Fare: RM 43

From Tanah Rata to TBS, Kuala Lumpur: RM 45

Total Roundtrip Bus Fare (KL TO CAMERON HIGHLANDS ROUNDTRIP): RM 88 PER PERSON

Where to Stay:

Since Tanah Rata is the town center in Cameron Highlands, you can find many options for hotels, cafes, and restaurants in this area. I booked this amazing accommodation on Booking.com. It’s called Gerard’s Backpackers, and it costs only RM146 per night for two people. I like this place because it’s near Tanah Rata, which can be walked to, but it’s also not near the main road, so it’s quite peaceful if you stay here. Also, it has a breathtaking view, which is amazing from the balcony.

TRAVEL ITINERARY GUIDE (Overnight in Cameron Highlands)

Banana Leaf for Lunch—Head to the Restoran Sri Brinchang, located conveniently within Tanah Rata. The food is tasty and flavorful, especially if you enjoy Indian food. Then, after that, we checked into our accommodation to get some rest.

Have English Scones and Tea Time—We went to Scott’s Cafe, as it has a high recommendation from TripAdvisor. We ordered the English scones and tea set with clotted cream cheese and strawberry jam. They were really good and absolutely fantastic.

Enjoy a steamboat dinner, popularly known as hot pot, on a cold evening in the Cameron Highlands. With a reasonable price, we went to this steamboat restaurant located just within the town center of Tanah Rata, where you can choose different ingredients like meats, seafood, and vegetables cooked in a pot of simmering, flavorful broth. It has a nice balcony vibe, and this is definitely something you should not miss when you visit Cameron Highlands.

Visit the Tea Plantation—Ideally, you can come here in the morning when it’s not too hot in the plantation. You can easily hire a taxi for only 90 RM that can take you back and forth to the tea plantation. My friend rented one and just split the bill in two, which cost us 45 RM each. We stayed in the plantation until noon.

Have breakfast at a local restaurant for Roti Canai and Teh Tarik. Enjoy the cold breeze in the morning in Cameron Highlands on a Sunday before heading back to the city.

Buy a souvenir at the pastry shop—I highly recommend Naux Pastry, as they have the best cakes and pastries in the area. After enjoying our treats, we decided to explore the beautiful surroundings, taking in the lush greenery and stunning views before heading back to the main town.
